Heavy turnout for rail poll

Turnout was heavy for the first day of advance polling on Lake Country's rail corridor borrowing referendum.

Tuesday's advance poll attracted 1,053 voters by the time the poll closed at 8 p.m.

"Our first advanced voting day generated a lot of interest," says Chief Electoral Officer Reyna Seabrook. “There was a pretty steady stream of voters all day, and we had 11 per cent of all eligible voters turn out on the first day.”

There are five more voting days, including four days of advance voting and general voting day on April 25.

“Based on feedback from the last general election, we’ve added polls in each of the wards, so no matter where you live, we hope we’ve captured the variety of voting days and locations across the district that will fit your schedule,” says Seabrook.

“Eligible electors can vote at any poll, not just the one in their ward.”

Advance voting continues today, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Oyama Community Hall.

On Friday, voters can cast ballots at the Carr’s Landing Fire Hall (10-7).

On Monday, advance polling is at Okanagan Centre Community Hall (10-7).

And on Tuesday, advance voting is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lake Country Municipal Hall.

Polls are also open 8-8 on general voting day at the George Elliot Secondary School gym.

Voters must bring two pieces of ID, at least one with a signature, to the polling station to prove residency and identity.
