Orchard Park reopens

UPDATE 8:50 A.M.

It's business as usual today at Orchard Park Mall.

Mall administration tweeted out this morning the mall will reopen at the usual time of 10 a.m.

Orchard Park was evacuated shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday after a suspicious package was discovered at Sears.

The bomb squad was called in from Vancouver to deal with the situation. Before the bomb squad arrived, a decision was made to shut down the mall for the remainder of the business day.

A sweep of the entire mall was also conducted as a precaution.

UPDATE 9:45 P.M.

Kelowna RCMP say the Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) has located the suspicious package.

Their team is now completing a secondary search of the entire mall as a precaution.

The RCMP are expected to release further details in the morning.

UPDATE 7:15 P.M.

The Bomb Squad has arrived from Vancouver, via air, and is currently in Orchard Park Mall investigating the suspicious package.

RCMP officers on the scene say they are not concerned for anyone’s safety.

A few mall employees are still on the scene hoping to get back into the mall tonight.

UPDATE 5:15 P.M.

The Bomb Squad from the Lower Mainland is now expected to arrive by 6:30 p.m. tonight.

The mall has been closed down for the rest of the day.

RCMP say they cannot confirm any details about the package or any potential suspects except to say members are poring over security footage from the store.

UPDATE 4:15 P.M.

The mood was calm outside Orchard Park Shopping Centre Wednesday afternoon after the mall was evacuated.

The mall was evacuated sometime after 2 p.m. when a suspicious package was discovered inside Sears.

One mall employee told Castanet News the store was cordoned off around 2 p.m. and, a short time later an announcement over the mall sound system asked everyone to leave because of an emergency.

The evacuation was orderly.

Outside, about a hundred people, most of those keyholders, remained in the east parking lot between Sears and Best Buy.

Transit buses were brought in to provide extra comfort to the keyholders who had to remain on the premises.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Duncan said the package was deemed suspicious enough by members to call in the bomb squad.

They are on their way from Vancouver.

"I have not seen the package. Apparently there were some photos taken but our members on scene who have some experience in regards to explosives deemed they needed the special section come in."

Duncan said he can't confirm any details about the package or any potential suspects except to say members are poring over security footage from the store.

No word when the or if the mall will reopen tonight.

A suspicious package left in a department store at Orchard Park Mall has prompted police to evacuate the shopping centre.

RCMP have cleared the mall of shoppers and employees, and it is expected to be closed for the remainder of the day.

An employee at the mall tells Castanet News that the package was discovered in Sears at about 2 p.m.

Shortly thereafter, an announcement was broadcast throughout the mall asking shoppers to evacuate the area.

Hundreds of shoppers have congregated outside and the Kelowna Hazmat crew has been called to the scene.

Police are requesting the public stay away from Orchard Park and the surrounding area to assist the police operations currently underway.

Spokesman Cpl. Joe Duncan confirms that a suspicious package was located and that the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit has been called. He anticipates the bomb squad will arrive on scene between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
