Remembering Const. Bruce

Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the events that led to the death of RCMP Const. Neil Bruce.

He remains the only member of the Kelowna RCMP detachment killed in the line of duty.

Bruce was shot while attempting to negotiate the release of a 16-year old Lumby girl, who was being forcibly confined and sexually assaulted in a cabin near Powers Creek.

He was shot during an early morning incident on April 10, 1965, in what is now Glenrosa and died in hospital four days later.

A middle school in West Kelowna bearing his name is the only school in Canada named for a slain member of the RCMP.

Over the next two days Castanet News will run a series of stories on Const. Neil Bruce the man and the incident which ultimately took his life.
