Preserve a piece of home

The Kelowna Art Gallery wants to help you capture your memories of home, in a new artistic project called “Preserves”.

The community-based initiative will explore the history of Kelowna, and the stories of the people who have shaped the city.

To do this, items of significance will be 'preserved' in clear coloured gelatin, in mason jars, to put on display.

The results of this project will then be shown as part of an exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery from November 2015 to January 2016.

“We want to hear your stories and memories about living in Kelowna,” says Joshua Desnoyers, with the gallery. “Our aims are to involve people of all ages and ethnicities, to use art to create bridges among generations and ethnicities, and to explore the history of Kelowna’s development.”

To capture these important moments the gallery will be hosting three workshops with Kootenay-based artist Maggie Shirley.

“During these workshops, participants will talk about their stories and memories of living in Kelowna, and discuss their hopes for the future,” adds Desnoyers.

Participants who want to attend are asked to bring an object, photograph, or written words that are symbolic of their personal story and their wish for the future of Kelowna.

The workshops are free and open to anyone to attend. All ages are welcome and no art experience is necessary.

Workshop dates:

  • Wednesday, April 8     6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Friday, April 10            1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 11        3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

You can register for the workshop by contacting Renee Burgess, Head of Public Programming, at 250-762-2226 ext 310, or by email at [email protected].
