CFIA found no safety risks

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency responded to complaints at Valoroso Foods last month, but an inspection by the agency found no food safety risk violations.

According to Tammy Jarbeau with the government’s media relations department, the CFIA is continuing to follow up with the company to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

However, it should be noted that foods with a durable life greater than 90 days do not require a best-before date, and changing the date on food is not a violation of the Food and Drugs Act.

That being said, Jarbeau does note that it is illegal to sell food that is known to be unsafe, and it’s the responsibility of food manufacturers, producers and retailers to ensure the food they produce and sell is safe.

“If retailers, or any other players in the food system, are found to be non-compliant with any aspect of the regulations, the CFIA has a range of enforcement options, from education to prosecution,” she says.
