Free tax returns for some

A small glimmer of good news for Target employees this tax season.

Liberty Tax Service Canada will prepare tax returns for free for employees at Target Canada in light of Target's exit from Canada.

"We know how difficult it can be on families and individuals when a job is lost," said John Dobbs, director of Canadian operations of Liberty Tax Service Canada. "We want to do what we can to help our neighbours as they try to move forward with their lives."

Liberty Tax preparers can help individuals understand which filing status may best suit their situation, how unemployment income is treated on tax returns and which job search expenses may be deductible.

There are Liberty Tax offices in Kelowna and Kamloops.

As a part of the Canadian Volunteer Income Tax Program, the Okanagan College accounting club also prepares tax returns for free for some people.

Individuals who make under $30,000, couples who make under $40,000, or individuals with one child and make less than $35,000 or up to an additional $2,500 for each child after one.

They are at the Kelowna campus Monday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and at Metro on Tuesday 9 a.m. to  11 a.m. and Wednesday's 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. this runs until the end of April.
