Local artist Iceland bound

A local Kelowna artist takes inspiration from everything she sees, and this spring she hopes to be inspired by the icebergs of Iceland.

Alexandra Edmonds is headed to Iceland for the month of May to explore what she says is a country like no other.

“It feels like you are almost going back in time,” says Edmonds. “It is so untouched in a way, by human foot print. There are volcanoes, and geothermal areas, and boiling mud pits, and geysers, and waterfalls, and black beaches from the volcanic activity, and it almost feels like you are going to the start of time in a weird way. It is almost like an alien landscape.”

This is the second time Edmonds will visit Iceland. She spent a month there a few years ago painting waterfalls.

“I didn't really know what to expect. It was my first time going to a foreign country by myself, where I didn't know any of the language, and I was going to a very small isolated fishing village. But, the people were really lovely, and the landscape was so different and unusual,” says Edmonds who feels she only got to scratch the surface of what Iceland has to offer.

“I didn't get to see any icebergs or glaciers, so I am really excited to go back for a different artist residency this time.”

She says that she also wants to take the opportunity to document that icebergs and glaciers that are continually disappearing and melting every year.

Edmonds says artists are often driven and inspired by their surroundings, and that her last changed the way she practiced her craft.

“I totally started painted differently,” says Edmonds. “I was scraping with a palette knife and thinking about how the earth builds and erodes away. As an artist you are always looking for inspiration, and changing your environment is one key way that really makes a huge impact on your art.”

Edmonds has called Kelowna home for over a decade and has even spent time teaching at UBC Okanagan where she completed her education.

She says you never know where your life can take when you put love and effort into your passion.

“I am very passionate about art, and I really want to make my art approachable. I think I often hear people say “Wow, you are so talented,” but they don't see the years of work I put into learning how to paint, and how much of that is acquired skill, because it is something that I love to do,” says Edmonds. “I am following my dreams in a way.”

You can follow Edmonds work on social media, check out her website or watch her Icelandic journey on YouTube. Some of her work is also being featured at the downtown Kelowna restaurant, Wine & Art on Lawrence.

“I think art can be taken so seriously sometimes, but artists are people too. You know it is fun to see what it is actually like to be an artist, what my art practice is and what I actually do.”

Edmonds leaves Kelowna April 29 and will spend the month of May in Iceland, painting the icebergs.
