Some delays at YLW

Some delays and cancellations at Kelowna International Airport as a result of the storm that has battered the Southern Interior over the past 24 hours.

WestJet has cancelled many of its flights today (Monday). The airline will apparently make extra flights available Tuesday for those wishing to re-book with the airline.

If you are booked on a WestJet flight that has been cancelled you are asked to contact the airline.

The storm has caused several other delays.

"Winter operations are in effect (at YLW) so we are seeing some delays and cancellations," says media spokesperson, Jenelle Hynes.

"We are asking people to keep an eye on the website, www.ylw.kelowna.ca and still arrive in plenty of time. But, if their flight has been cancelled to contact the airline specifically."

The snowstorm hitting the Okanagan Sunday is causing some havoc at local airports.

Jenelle Hynes at Kelowna International Airport said there have been a few cancellations and several delays.

"One Alaska Airlines flight earlier today from Seattle cancelled due to runway conditions," she said. "Other flights were able to land and take off but it wasn't ideal for that airline. "

"Then two WestJet Encore flights were cancelled, and they were cancelled in advance of taking off due to projected conditions upon that aircrafts arrival."

Those flights were coming from Victoria and Vancouver and were scheduled for 2:04 p.m. and 2:09 p.m. respectively. The return flights have subsequently been cancelled as well.

Hynes said passengers on cancelled flights would be rebooked today or tomorrow.

"It's always a frustrating time, this is one of our busiest travel days," Hynes said. "Sunday and Monday are our last of the peak busy days where we have almost 7,500 passengers in and out of the airport today as well as tomorrow."

On a normal travel day they typically see around 4,200 passengers.

Hynes said winter equipment is fully active between flights sweeping and plowing the runway as well as testing for ice.

"They've got a window right now (between flights), so they're cleaning the runway but the problem right now is visibility," she said.

However, due to the timing of the flights, so far everyone that was headed for Mexico has made it out of Kelowna.

Transport Canada could not be immediately reached for comment on Penticton's airport, but Air Canada said that the 6:30 p.m. flight to Vancouver had been cancelled.
