Carma strikes twice

Two deserving Kelowna moms drove away in their new set of wheels today after being selected as this year’s recipients of The Carma Project.

This is the fourth year of the initiative which, for the first time, saw two worthy individuals getting new rides.

The non-profit organization was founded by Integra Tire husband and wife duo Bruce and Penny Stranaghan who say they wanted to give back.

“They are on their way. We are not giving a helping hand out; we are giving a hand up. They are on their way already, they are trying to improve their life already and they just need a break,” says a joyful Penny Stranaghan about the two women selected.

The Carma Project finds treasures in trash, salvaging cars people have left because it will cost to much to repair and finding them deserving homes.

“If we look at the car and we can see if we can get Lordco to donate parts…get the community involved in recycling this vehicle, then we can give it to someone that doesn’t have one,” explains Stranaghan.

The young moms told Castanet they were overwhelmed with the attention, after a visit to the salon and a ride to the event via limo.

“It feels exciting, it feels like a new life. It is amazing, overwhelming,” giggles single-mom Lynette Schellenberg, moments after receiving keys to her new car.

Both moms have struggled in the past and are looking forward to a brighter future.

“I’ve had a bad history of bad relationships, abuse, homelessness and as of two years ago I become sober, clean and focused on my son,” shares Schellenberg while juggling 15-month-old Blayden who was enjoying the media cameras. “It has been a good change.”

“We have been using public transport for the past three and a half years now. Having to depend on others sometimes to get us grocery shopping,” shares second recipient and mother of two Annika Dodyk.

“Having that all of the sudden kind of lifted…it’s…” adds Dodyk smiling lost for words.

She says now all she wants to do is take it for a ride.

The two women also walked away with gifts from community sponsors including gift certificates for car insurance, gas, clothes and gift baskets.
