In celebration of the annual limited-edition Birds of the UBC Okanagan Campus 2015 wall calendar, Castanet and UBCO are inviting readers to send in their own bird photography for a chance to win one of three coveted calendars.

The calendar was created by a trio of camera-wielding biology professors in the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences department who love photography and love wildlife.

“We all like to take pictures of birds and we have accumulated some nice shots, and it is always nice to share,” explains contributor and UBCO Associate Professor Bob Lalonde who worked with Associate Professor Blythe Nilson and Dr. Ian Walker on the calendar.

“It is also nice to raise awareness about the diversity we have here on campus,” adds Lalonde. “It is a beautiful spot and there is an amazing variety of birds that show up here at one point or another during the year.”

Lalonde adds that all sale proceeds from the calendar will go towards supporting undergraduate research projects.

"We're thrilled to be able to combine birding and photography into a fundraising activity that benefits our students," says Lalonde, adding that it has been so popular, the wildlife calendar may very well become an annual tradition.

The new calendar is now only $15 and shows a vast array of the winged birds seen across campus—all 516 acres (209 hectares) of it.

Lalonde promises photos of a bald eagle, a mourning dove, a woodpecker; a bluebird couple in the ponderosa pine forest; and a hallmark species at Robert Lake, American avocets.

Sales of last year's calendar raised $2,500. To boost sales this year, the price was lowered from $20 to $15 with sales proceeds going towards undergraduate education, offsetting costs for such things as lab supplies and printing for students involved in research projects.

For your chance to win a coveted Birds of the UBC Okanagan Campus 2015 calendar, send your best Okanagan bird photos to [email protected]. Make sure to include your full name and where you took the photo.
