Junior elites race Saturday

A Canadian girl from Ottawa won the female junior elite category in the Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon Saturday morning.

This was Samantha Klus' third Apple triathlon and first win in the junior elite category with an official time of 1:03:56. She is 19 years old and was one of 27 female racers.

"It's always a nice race. I knew the course, that's always a bonus," she said. "There were no hills on this course and my favourite is biking so I kind of wish there were hills."

Klus said she knows many of the girls she was racing against and many of them are friends outside of race day.

This was her last race of the year and next year she will be competing in the U-23 category.

"The Apple triathlon is always a great race, the volunteers are amazing, it's always super well set up. It's my favourite race."

Shortly after the girls finished, the junior elite boys hit the water at 11:30 a.m.

Russell Pennock from Alberta defeated 30 other racers to win the boys junior elite race with a time of 55:30.

With the junior elite races complete, the day finishes out with sprint and Olympic course tours for Sunday's racers, a Moksha yoga class and a pasta dinner at 5 p.m.
