Rutland fire not suspicious

Update -- August 20

The Kelowna RCMP have ruled out foul play as the cause of a structure fire believed to be suspicious.

A further investigation has determined that a barbeque was the cause of the blaze.

UPDATE 2:55 P.M.


The Kelowna RCMP have deemed Thursday's house fire in Rutland suspicious.

Fire investigators with both the RCMP and Kelowna Fire Department are still on the scene and continue to investigate the cause.

The fire, at a home in the 200 block of Bach Road, was called in about 10 p.m. Thursday.

A covered deck was destroyed by the blaze while the interior of the home suffered extensive heat and smoke damage.

Police are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact Cst. Greg Wilcocks at 250-762-3300.

Update 6:50 a.m. Aug. 15:

At approximately 9:55 p.m. Thursday night the Kelowna Fire Dept. responded to a report of a house on fire in the 200 block of Bach Rd.

The first crew saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the back of the residence. Four occupants that were at home got out safely, but they reported that their pet dog was still inside. The fire fighters extinguished the fire and rescued the family pet. There were no injuries.

A covered deck was destroyed by the fire and the inside of the house suffered extensive damage from heat and smoke.

There were 16 personnel working on the fire with assistance from BCAS, RCMP, and FortisBC.

At this time the cause of the fire is unknown. The scene will be investigated by the Kelowna fire department investigator along with RCMP.

The Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind everyone to dispose of smoking materials properly.

Original story 10:30 p.m. Aug. 14:

The Kelowna fire department was called to a house fire on Bach Road in Rutland Thursday night.

When they arrived they could see flames shooting from the side of the home.

Everyone was able to get out safely.

The call came in just before 10 p.m., firefighters gained the upper hand on the blaze by about 10:30 p.m.
