Ellison Wildfire

6 p.m. Update:

The fire in Ellison is now 100 per cent guarded and crews are in the mop-up stage.

Although structures were nearby crews from the Ellison Fire department and forestry firefighters were able to contain the blaze that appears to have started in a pile of logs beside the roadway. A helicopter provided  support for ground crews, it was able to fill up from a nearby pond.

It is estimated the fire was almost a hectare in size.

4:20 p.m. original story: Fire crews from the Ellison fire hall are heading to a large grass fire in the area of Farmers Drive and Deadpine Drive off Postill Lake Road.

Forestry crews have also been called in to help.

Forestry is sending a ground crew, air tanker and helicopter.

The Castanet reader who sent the above picture says they saw dirt bikers coming down the hill just before seeing the smoke.

More details to come.
