Suspicious fires in Kelowna

Kelowna RCMP are investigating two hedge fires that were safely extinguished early Saturday morning.

On August 2 at 1:34 a.m., the Kelowna RCMP and the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a report of a hedge fire located on the 400 block of Highway 33 East in Kelowna.

The heat from the blaze caused damage to nearby garbage bins, and vegetation. This blaze was extinguished before the flames could spread to nearby residences.
One hour later, at 2:29 a.m., police responded to a report of a second hedge fire, this time on the 100 block of Ponto Road in Kelowna.

When emergency personnel arrived, the fire had spread to involve a large shed on the property. The occupants of the residence were not home at the time. The Kelowna Fire Department extinguished the blaze before it could spread and cause more damage.

One nearby resident said they heard two explosions around 2:30 a.m. and saw the flames behind a house on Ponto Road.
Police are treating both fires as suspicious and continue to investigate the possibility that they are related.
Kelowna RCMP are asking the public to report any suspicious persons or activity.
Anyone who may have witnessed any persons or vehicles in the area at the time of the fires are asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300. Remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net or by texting your tip to CRIMES (274637) ktown.
