Car share expands in Kelowna

Kelowna-based OGO Car Share Co-op, which launched its services in August 2013, has grown in membership and just added a 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid to their fleet this week.

The Co-op has over 90 members and the Honda Civic will be the fourth vehicle in their fleet.

“We are extremely excited that OGO is able to add another vehicle to our fleet” said executive director Christian Brandt “and provide our members with more vehicles to choose from to help meet our members’ transportation needs. We have seen a significant increase over the past couple of months in usage as well as in new member sign ups where it is time now for the co-op and its members to add another vehicle.”

The City of Kelowna has been a great help in this process and the new vehicle will be parked at City Hall parking lot right next to a pick-up truck that also belongs to the carshare.

The Co-op plans to expand its fleet to more neighbourhoods this year. This supports OGO’s mandate to provide more people with convenient and affordable access to carsharing and to provide a practical alternative to owning a vehicle or second family car.

“We see more and more individuals and businesses embracing the concept of carsharing” says Executive Director Christian Brandt. "If everything goes well in the next couple of months, we want to grow our fleet to 7 to 8 vehicles by the end of this year".

Many businesses have realized that carsharing is a cost-effective and convenient alternative to managing their own fleets or reimbursing their employees for business trips. Furthermore, carsharing provides employees with an alternative to the single-occupant vehicle commute, allowing them to bike, bus, or walk to work. Employees can easily book vehicles online for site visits or other business-related trips without the costs and burden of car ownership. In addition, through roaming agreements with other carshare organizations OGO members have access to over 300 cars in Vancouver and 50 more within BC and across Canada!

Carsharing provides members with vehicles on an hourly as-needed basis; vehicles are conveniently located in downtown Kelowna and Pandosy Village, and members can book online to access vehicles whenever they need.
