Cops watch as suspect flees

Wrong place - wrong time.

A 21-year-old Kelowna man learned a hard lesson about attempting a robbery with the cops lurking around.

It all came down shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, June 9 while a uniformed RCMP member sat in the parking lot of Berezan Liquor Store on Hwy. 33 West.

While conducting an investigation into a previous incident, the member observed a man run from the store and flee on a bicycle.

"Thinking the man had just stolen the bottle of booze he was carrying the officer gave chase," said Cst. Kris Clark.

"Staff from the store quickly ran out and confirmed the investigator's suspicions. After a brief chase the officer arrested the suspect and recovered the hijacked hooch."

Clark says Niko Murray Haines had just been released from custody that day, after being arrested over the weekend for a previous shoplifting offence.

He pled guilty the following day to two counts of Theft Under $5,000 and one count of Obstruction.

Haines was sentenced to 89 days in jail.
