Power restored

UPDATE MAY 9 10:30 A.M. - Turns out it was a faulty underground cable that caused Thursday's power outage in downtown Kelowna.

Power went out shortly before 4 p.m. and was restored for most of those affected by about 8 p.m.

FortisBC officials say because the problem was underground crews had to go from junction box to junction box to try and isolate the cause.

Power did go out again later in the evening, however, officials say that is normal to allow for the balance of power to be restored.

About 260 residential and business customers were affected by the outage.

UPDATE: 8 P.M. - Businesses along Bernard tell Castanet power is restored.

UPDATE 6:19 P.M. - Power has now been restored for most customers in Kelowna's downtown core.

FortisBC expects the rest of those affected by Thursday's outage to have power restored by 8 p.m.

Company officials say the problem has been isolated to a faulty cable.

189 customers were left in the dark when the power went off shortly before 4 p.m.

UPDATE 5:10 P.M. - Power is out to about 189 commercial and resident customers in downtown Kelowna.

Power went off shortly before 4 p.m.

FortisBC officials say the outage is affecting customers on Water and Abbott streets and Lawrence and Bernard avenues.

Crews are still trying to pinpoint the exact cause, however, it appears to be an underground portion of the system that is at fault making troubleshooting a little more difficult.

No word on when power will be restored.

Motorists should consider any traffic lights that are not operational as four-way stop intersections.

Power is out to several businesses in downtown Kelowna.

FortisBC says the power went out at about 3:50 Thursday afternoon.

Officials say crews are en route and they will know more once those crews get to the scene.

It appears the outage is only affecting businesses around Lawrence Avenue.

Traffic lights are out at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Water Street and at Pandosy Street and Bernard Avenue.

More details when they become available.
