Man hit crossing highway

A 53-year-old Kelowna man is in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle Monday morning.

The incident occurred on Harvey Avenue near the intersection with Ethel Street, just before noon.

Police at the scene say witnesses reported seeing a man running across the highway when he was struck by a car in the eastbound left-hand turning lane.

Traffic had mostly slowed or stopped for a red light but the turning lane was still flowing.

As the man exited from between vehicles he ran into the passenger side of a slow-moving Chevy Optra, his head striking the windshield.

The 53-year-old Kelowna man was rushed to hospital with apparent non-life threatening injuries.

The incident occurred only metres from the controlled crosswalk at Harvey and Ethel.

No charges have yet been laid and the investigation is still ongoing.

Cst. Kris Clark says pedestrians are urged to use designated crosswalks or intersections and to make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

Never assume that drivers see you.
