Driver flees from police

A 22-year-old Kelowna man is facing multiple charges after fleeing from police last night on Highway 33.

An RCMP officer on routine patrol noticed a red Ford Mustang travelling westbound accelerate towards Gerstmar Road and skid through the turn, causing traffic to brake heavily to avoid a collision.

The vehicle then sped towards Springfield Road where it was forced to brake for a red light. During this time, the officer managed to catch up and turn on his emergency equipment in order to conduct a traffic stop.

However the car took off on Springfield at a high rate of speed, before it was located at a residence in the 3700 block of Casorso Road.

The young man – who cannot be named until his first court appearance – was taken into custody without incident and then proceeded to blow one and a half times the legal limit during a sobriety test.

He now faces possible charges of impaired driving, driving while prohibited and flight from police.

The car was impounded for seven days.
