Car vs. bus on Hwy. 33

Emergency crews are on the scene of an accident involving a city bus and a small car.

Witnesses report a red vehicle collided with the back of a city bus on Hwy. 33 near Davie Rd., Friday morning.

The impact caused the air bag on the vehicle to be deployed, people passing by attended to the driver until emergency crews arrived.

Police say the bus was stopped when the car crashed into rear of the bus at full speed. The 40-year-old driver of the car was knocked unconscious and has been taken to hospital with what is being called non life-threatening injuries.

"At this point in time we don’t have a cause as to what happened, it’s obviously driver inattention," says Scott Falkingham, with the Kelowna RCMP.

“It looks like he didn’t even attempt to brake, he just drove into the back of the bus.

It is unknown how many passengers were on the bus, but no injuries were reported. Some witnesses said the bus was on fire, but authorities have confirmed that was not the case, instead stating that leaking coolant had caused the smoke.

Highway 33 is down to one lane heading east, but is not affecting motorists traveling west.
