Son describes Angel savagery

Kody Phillips, 25, spoke on the stand Tuesday during the trial of four Hell’s Angels associates, describing the terrifying and brutal attack on his father, Dain Phillips, in June 2011.

The vicious attack by several Hell’s Angels took only seconds but “felt like forever”, according to Phillips.

Phillips said that a minor dispute between himself and his brother with accused Matthew and Daniel McRae was the trigger for the attack, and that his father had attempted a peaceful resolution to the dispute, insisting that weapons were not needed in a meeting with the McRaes.

At the meeting, a “big guy with tattoos all over his arm” got out of a truck carrying a hammer and small baseball bat. “He was yelling, ‘You want to f*ck with the Hell’s Angels? You want to f*ck with the Hell’s Angels?’” said Phillips.

According to the Vancouver Province, Phillips stated that his father got out of his truck and put his hands in the air in a gesture of surrender, which met with kicks by a tattooed man, and bashes to the head with a baseball bat by a second man. A third man, identified by Phillips as accused Robert Cocks, kicked Dain Phillips as he lay on the ground.

The two McRae brothers and accused Anson Schell also kicked his father, according to Phillips.

Kody Phillips then grabbed a shovel and ran to his father’s side, swinging at the attackers until they left. He then administered first aid, but his father started to have seizures.”I tried to stop the bleeding,” he said, “but he was gone. He’d lost too much blood.”

The trial continues.
