A group of senior citizens received new fridges this morning as part of a joint initiative between FortisBC and the provincial government.
Each of the 43 units at the Brookside Residences on Mountain View Street in Glenmore received a new energy efficient fridge delivered from The Brick.
Nicole Bogdanovic, with FortisBC’s PowerSense group, says they are working with the Ministry of Energy and Mines on this project and were approached by Kelowna’s Orchard Park Senior Housing Society. The society will be receiving 60 new fridges and another 187 will go elsewhere in the southern interior.
“That effectively removes 250 inefficient fridges from our grid, which is a huge win for us from an energy savings perspective,” says Bogdanovic.
“Each fridge will save them between $50-200 per year, and that is money that can go straight to their operational costs.”
Other upgrades will include new energy saving lighting to the common areas of the building, draft proofing and new showerheads.
Bogdanovic says Fortis has done the same types of upgrades to around 200 non-profit housing societies and community buildings in the province.
The total cost of the project was approximately $125,000 split evenly with the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
