Suspect collides with cop car

Update -- 3:00 p.m.

According to the Kelowna RCMP, a 28-year-old man wanted on outstanding warrants was the cyclist struck by an RCMP vehicle Friday morning.

He was taken to hospital but appears to have suffered no major injuries.

Three vehicles were found to be damaged in the underground parking of the apartment building and police recovered property believed to have been stolen from them.

The man faces potential charges of Theft, Mischief, Possession of Break-In Instruments and Possession of Stolen Property. He will be held in custody to appear on his outstanding charge.

An alleged thief ran into an RCMP cruiser while attempting to flee from police Friday morning in Kelowna's north end.

Police at the scene were trying to piece the events together, however, Cpl. Bill Parmar says it appears as if the suspect, fleeing on a bicycle, went over the corner of a police car and onto the sidewalk.

Parmar says events began to unfold when police were called to a report of a break and enter at an underground parking lot on Manhattan Drive.

He says police identified a suspect who fled the scene on a bicycle.

He was spotted by the RCMP helicopter and members closed in trying to get the man to stop.

"Numerous attempts were made to try and stop him and question him," says Parmar.

"As a member was behind him the cyclist kept peddling and made a right turn onto Cawston from Graham. Another police car was driving up the street...the cyclist cut in front of the member tying to get around him and onto the sidewalk."

Parmar says it appears he may have caught some ice and went over the corner of the police car.

He says the driver of the police cruiser may have been attempting to stop at the same time the cyclist cut in front of him.

The suspect was being treated at the scene by BC Ambulance paramedics. The extend of his injuries are not known.

According to Parmar, items found at the scene appear to be stolen.

"Other investigators are checking that out to try and verify that."

He says a property rep interrupted thieves who were rummaging through vehicles in the underground parking lot.

Police are trying to determine the whereabouts the possible second suspect.
