YLW getting back to normal

Update -- Jan. 17, 7:30 a.m.

It’s almost back to usual for YLW as the heavy fog that blanketed Kelowna yesterday has begun to dissipate.

There are only two delayed departures this morning – flight 224 to Edmonton and flight 8414 to Vancouver.

On the arrivals side, a Sunwing vacations flight that was scheduled to arrive last night will be landing this morning, and flight 8408 from Vancouver has also been delayed until later this morning.

Update -- 8:00 p.m.

All flights leaving Kelowna and the majority coming into town have been cancelled Thursday night as a thick blanket of fog continues to hang over the valley.

Flights for Friday morning are currently on schedule with hopes the fog will dissipate by then.

Check the YLW Kelowna Airport website for current information on flights.

Update -- 12:15 p.m.

Delays and cancellations continue to pile up at the Kelowna International Airport as heavy fog from this morning is still lingering over the valley.

The fog is affecting almost every airline, with most departure times now delayed until at least the early afternoon.

“As of 11 a.m. there have been five arrivals canceled, and four departure flights canceled with numerous delays,” says Jenelle Hynes, Airport Marketing and Media Relations person at YLW.

“Earlier this morning we had visibility dropping down to less than a quarter mile, and this is of course zero visibility so flights cannot arrive or depart.”

Flights trying to land at YLW require a 251-foot ceiling (from the clouds to the ground), plus one-mile vertical visibility and departures need a minimum of a half-mile of visibility.

Both the departure and arrivals board is littered with delays, affecting flights to and from places like Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Red Deer and Mexico.

However this is reason for optimism, as Hynes says the cloud ceiling has slightly lifted since this morning and a Westjet flight recently landed, leading to more traffic movement at the airport.

Another issue compounding the problem is a thick layer of fog at YVR in Vancouver too.

Travelers should be aware of their new departure times and plan accordingly.

Original story -- 8:00 a.m.

A number of flights to and from YLW have been delayed this morning due to heavy fog at the Kelowna airport.

Flight 617 from Edmonton that was due to arrive at 8:55 a.m. has been cancelled and another four flights from Vancouver (2) and Calgary (2) that were expected to land this morning have been delayed.

A number of departure flights have also been affected, including the cancellation of flight 617 to Vancouver that was expected to depart at 7:40 a.m. Other delays include Vancouver flight 8413 and a Sunwing Vacations flight to Mexico.

It’s recommended that travellers check with YLW to ensure their flights are on time.
