Passenger traffic breaks records at YLW

The Kelowna airport soared to new heights in 2013, with new destinations, new airlines and growing passenger numbers.

Each month seemed to break a new record for passenger traffic at YLW, with the final numbers showing a solid 4 per cent increase over 2012, and an 8 per cent increase on numbers from 2011.

“This has been a tremendous year for the YLW community,” says Airport Director Sam Samaddar.

“We have a record number of airlines serving our region to a record number of destinations and we had each of the 12 months reach record breaking numbers.”

Two new airlines – Air North-Yukon’s Airline and Pacific Coastal Airlines – added Kelowna to their route map last year, and Whitehorse, Abbotsford, Cranbrook, and Ixtapa/Zihautanejo, Mexico became new destinations.

The two busiest months of the past year were August (143,555 passengers) and December (136,145). August's numbers were up 5.5 per cent over the same month in 2012.

YLW now offers over 60 daily non-stop commercial flights.
