Delays at YLW due to weather
Travel delays at Kelowna International Airport couldn't have come at a worse time.
Harsh winter conditions in Vancouver, Ontario and Alberta are contributing to flight delays both arriving and departing from YLW.
At the present time, seven flights are delayed coming into and leaving from Kelowna International Airport.
Delays of flights from Vancouver and Calgary range from several minutes to over two hours.
"There are heavy winter weather warnings so you are seeing major delays coming from Vancouver, Victoria and Abbotsford," says YLW spokesperson, Jenelle Hynes.
"You can still see delays with Alberta and Ontario, because Ontario is having bad weather and when those flights are stopping in Alberta and coming here, they are all delayed."
Friday's United flight from Los Angeles was cancelled altogether because of an inadequate cloud ceiling.
While many airlines that land in Kelowna require a minimum cloud ceiling of 251 feet, Hynes says the United flight requires a 651 foot ceiling.
YLW had a 600 foot ceiling and, with the forecast calling from similar weather throughout the day, the decision was made to cancel the flight.
Hynes says the airline is working with passengers to try and get them re-booked as soon as possible.
"You have to feel for passengers, especially at this time of year. People are anxious to see their loved ones or start their Christmas holidays," says Hynes.
The busy holiday travel season actually began yesterday (Thursday) at YLW.
With flights to Phoenix, Vegas and Mexico leaving on Thursday's - it's the second busiest travel day of the week at this time of year, matched only by Sunday.
