Veterans meeting with MP Cannan

Local veterans, members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada and Union of Veterans Affairs Employees met with Kelowna-Lake Country MP, Ron Cannan today (Thursday) with concerns over the closure of the Kelowna Veteran's Affairs office.

The office is scheduled to close early in 2014 and replaced by a single officer stationed in the Service Canada office on Queensway.

They spoke with the MP about why putting one worker in a Service Canada office cannot make up for shutting down a veterans-only space where trained experts can provide face to face services to veterans.

In 2012, 10 people staffed the Kelowna Veterans Affairs office. This included two client service agents, five case managers and a district nursing officer.

They looked after 2,225 clients.

Under the new scenario one client service agent, based out of Penticton, would commute to Kelowna to fill the local position.

There are concerns some veterans will not feel comfortable talking about certain sensitive, personal topics in a Service Canada office as opposed to a private stand alone office.

In all 25 staff members are being cut from offices in Kelowna, Penticton, Prince George and Vancouver.

The Prince George office has already closed.
