Hockey Night in Canada's new tune?

To some children growing up and playing on Hockey Night in Canada would be a dream come true but for Kelowna resident Dan Thiessen his dream was a little more instrumental.

Inspired by the nations game he wanted to be apart of the sport in a much different way, a way in which he could lend his talent as a passionate singer/song writer.

"I remember watching Rocket Richard, when I was like five, six years-old on a black and white TV. I mean that is as far back as I go," says Thiessen. "So every Saturday night it was holy to me, that is what you do, it was part of my life and for 50 years I've been watching Hockey Night in Canada."

So when CBC launched a contest for Canadians to write and record our county's next great hockey song, Thiessen couldn't wait to get on board.

"When the song contest came up I thought this is just too wonderful. I mean I am a song writer, I've won song contests before but this is the contests of contests."

Almost 1,000 singer song writers from across Canada uploaded their soon to be hits to CBC Music and asked friends and family to get voting.

Thiessen says he wrote his song based on feel good emotions that encompassed the history of Hockey Night in Canada.

"Hockey Night in Canada spans well over 50 years, so I wanted to connect those who watched then to those who watch now, and so this song bridges that gap."

Thiessen who has worked with Shaw communications for several years has full support from his colleagues and friends who have taken to voting as much as possible for his song 'Oh Hockey Night in Canada'.

Friend and Co-worker Daniel Perez says Thiessen has a great talent for guitar.

"When he shared his YouTube version of Hockey Night in Canada I was blown away. It is amazing when you work with someone and you don't know those little facets about their life and when they share that I was just really impressed."

Co-worker Amera Lee says she isn't really surprised Thiessen decided to produce the song as he is known to be a singer song writer around the office.

"He's like a celebrity he seems to know a lot of people."

The deadline is now closing in to name the 'Top 50' and Thiessen needs all the votes he can get,  as well he must get the judges attention as they play a role in choosing the winner all before Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. eastern time

The winner will record a studio version of their song with Canadian rocker Joel Plaskett. Then, their track will air in a prime-time montage at the beginning of the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.
