Hockey heritage unveiled at YLW

A Penticton-based artist scored with his latest piece that has recently been installed at the Kelowna Airport.  It pays homage to both Canada’s national game and anyone who played hockey table games in their youth.

The piece built by Glenn Clark, who grew up in Kelowna and studied art at Okanagan College, is set up near the departures gate at YLW.

It’s a throwback to a larger than life depiction of the game in which players were moved around the board on long metal rods, wearing vintage jerseys of two of the NHL’s original teams.

“Best of Seven” also recalls a time when hockey players did not yet wear helmets and goalies had no face masks, and simpler equipment.

Using paint on plywood, Clark’s piece puts the viewer right in the centre of the action and his painted sheet metal players created in various sizes give the impressions of spatial recession.

The scaled-up puck made from an inverted cereal bowl is the finishing touch.

The piece of art will be on display until May 5, 2014.
