Cooler seasonal temperatures did not deter 90 athletes from running in the 30th annual Larry Nicholas memorial cross country race on Sunday.
The varied course with 3 loops through Mission Creek Regional Park was won by first time runner Jake Van Allen from Kelowna.
He completed the course in 31 minutes and 01 seconds, winning by a few seconds over contender Trevor Haaheim.
“Trevor was behind me, and then he pulled ahead. I just tried to bide my time and passed him at last little hill before you come down to the finish,” says Allen. “We just moved to Kelowna a few months ago and it’s the best place on earth.”
The Fastest lady of the day was Jane Bond, finishing in a time 0f 39 minutes and 10 seconds.
14 runners also ran the shorter course of 4 km, and a huge turnout of kids took part in the Kid’s race.
The annual Larry Nicholas run is carried out in memory of Larry Nicholas and Dick Greenway.
The two young men from Kelowna died in a 1983 tragic climbing accident in Leavenworth, Washington, when they tried to climb the treacherous Snow Creek Wall.
This year marked the 30th annual event. The Larry Nicholas run was the last one of this year’s 5 Interior cross country races.
