Rutland’s own Darren Bates is trying to bring a bit of Europe to Kelowna with his new mini-burger, poutine, and social chowder house called ‘Sliderz.’
Bates says he envisioned a community social hot spot.
“I used to live in Holland and they had these smaller glasses of beer, and I asked them why they do that they said it is so that is doesn’t get warm, its cheaper so I am more likely to buy for a friend and so I can share with people which in turn creates a social atmosphere.”
Something Bates hopes to emulate in his new burger joint.
Saturdays grand opening had over 500 people through the door by 3 pm with half of all food sales going to the Union Gospel.
“Today is all about community, we are having our grand opening right now and we wanted to share our grand opening with the community and wait until all the tourists had gone home so we could do an opening for the locals by a local,” says Bates.
He decided to bring in the local charity element and says he picked the United Way because the time they take to fund good and worthy projects.
As to why he felt Kelowna need a slider burger joint?
“Who wants to pay $16 for a gourmet burger? Who wants to have a $4 for a fast food burger? I wanted people to have real burgers like grannie used to make,” says Bates.
“I am not a corporation, I am just a guy with a second mortgage that is trying to make it all work and I grew up here and I watched the revitalization of Bernard and decided now was the time to open my big city/European/community concept in downtown Kelowna.”
According to Bates some must trys on the menu include their gourmet cheeseburgers as well as the fried chicken on homemade Belgian waffle burger served with Canadian maple syrup.
Also the poutine, “We have homemade gravy, we roast our own bones, we chip our own fresh potatoes and we use Montreal cheese curds,” explains Bates.
Not to mention their potato croquette appetizer. “A double breaded deep fried four cheese mash potato croquette with chorizo and onions served with gravy on top,” drools Bates.
With locals in mind Sliderz invites you to like their Facebook page where they intend to share 'locals only' day of specials that you will be able to see purely on their Facebook.
