100 years of military history in a mural

The Okanagan Military Museum Society officially unveiled their new mural on Tuesday, depicting over 100 years of service dedicated to the Royal Canadian Navy/Royal Canadian Air Force.
The mural is outside the museum, on the wall of the Kelowna Memorial Arena alongside two other murals, but it is different because it’s a collection of photos.
“We needed to have the pictures that told the story of the Navy and the Air Force and the people who served, but the pictures can’t be copy written,” explains Tom Wolf, who sits on the board of directors for the Kelowna Museum.
“We tried black and white, but it was too stark and boring in comparison to the others. It also had to have a high enough resolution that we could blow them up.”
The group had initially wanted an artist’s rendition, similar to the two previous murals but were forced to change directions when they couldn’t get an artist. After two years and 40 attempts, the final product was approved.
Wolf is especially happy with how some of the images turned out, considering they date from as far back as 1910.
A final cost for the project has yet to be finalized, but Wolf estimates it to be around $10,000. All funds were donated by Navy and Air Force veterans, and the museum society.
The Museum is open Tues., Thurs., and Sat. 10 a.m - 4 p.m.
