Arctic front will replace fog
Oct 22, 2013 / 4:36 pm
You can expect to see some fog and low cloud across the Okanagan Valley for the next few days.
Environment Canada meteorologist, Doug Lundquist, says the current conditions are being caused by an unusually strong high pressure front.
"We have a really strong ridge of high pressure that has been with us for a long time combined with warm air aloft, cooler, moist air near the surface trapped below the inversion," says Lundquist.
Sunday, higher elevation winds blew the early morning cloud and fog away earlier, resulting in a brilliant, sunny day.
Those same conditions have not materialized today (Tuesday), leaving the fog to linger.
Lundquist says the current conditions have also created two unusual weather events.
"We saw drizzle here the last couple of days near the airport and UBCO. None of us remember seeing that happen. It's very infrequent if ever that we see drizzle form in this kind of pattern," says Lundquist.
"I also don't remember in this pattern seeing fog right down to the lake level. Usually it's a few hundred metres above the lake level. It's very unusual for the fog to go right down into the city for any length of time."
While the fog may not be as pronounced, Lundquist does expect the current weather pattern to continue through to the end of the week before being replaced by a modified Arctic Front on the weekend.
"If our models are right it will definitely clear out on Saturday," says Lundquist.
"There is some Arctic air forecast to come down. Sunday will be a blustery day with northerly wind and cooler temperatures."
Lundquist doesn't expect much, if any precipitation to accompany the cooler weekend temperatures.
