Fun Run kicks off Marathon weekend
Oct 12, 2013 / 3:54 pm
The fifth annual BMO Okanagan Marathon is taking place in Kelowna’s City Park all weekend, with Saturday’s events centred on kids.
“We did this because we think it’s important to encourage physical fitness and activity for families,” said Sharon Babcock, a BMO employee who helped arrange the event along with approximately 55 other volunteers.
“We want to show that there’s more to us than banking. We really like to be involved in our community.”
Last year an activity centre for kids was added to the list of weekend events, featuring six stations of stretching, kicking, hurdles and relays all culminating in a 1 km Fun Run around the park at 12:45.
Nine-year-old Quinn Smith came all the way from Saskatoon with her parents and was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 4 min 26 seconds.
“It felt good,” she said. “I like to run.”
After the race, a cheque for $15,000 was presented on behalf of BMO to the Sunshine Foundation, a Canadian charity that provides individual dreams to children with severe physical disabilities as well as life-threatening illnesses.
“It's an amazing day,” said Sharon. “There’s nothing more precious than watching two- and three-year-olds running across the finish line with smiles on their faces.”
Sunday morning there will be a 10 km half marathon as well as a full, 21.1 km full marathon.
