Castanet in Kandahar: High morale

From an outsider's point of view, morale within the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan can best be described as extremely high.

Mind you, a bulk of our soldiers are young men and women looking for adventure and are just happy to be here.

In fact, I'm told by a senior ranking member that Canadian Forces have had to turn away recruits who, "all they want to do is go to Afghanistan."

Because I'm a reporter, some soldiers are naturally suspicious, but soon let down their guard and are quick to open up and take you in as one of their own.

As one soldier told me, the military is one big family.

"You can't like everyone you work with, but you put that aside because you're counting on that person to watch your back."

One thing the troops do dislike are reporters on the so-called 'death-watch'.

As in every warzone, some media outlets assign their reporters to report on fatalities.

"I think that's despicable," says one major."

I was quick to remind him that the media doesn't report on the plane that lands safely, but on the one that crashes.

About the author...

Kelly Hayes is a veteran journalist and the Video Producer/Chief Correspondent for Castanet Media.

Hayes' most recent international and national news coverage include the Haiti Earthquake and the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

He's now in Kandahar, Afghanistan, embedded with the Canadian Forces.

"As a journalist and Canadian citizen, the war in Afghanistan has been on my radar for quite some time. I grew up watching the Russians fighting in Afghanistan only to withdraw. Canada joined in 2001 when the U.S. launched its war against terrorism. Canada has since invested billions of dollars and sacrificed dozens of lives. But has it been worth it? That's what I hope to find out."
