Library bomb scare over

UPDATE: 11:30 a.m.

RCMP in Kamloops say a bomb scare at the downtown library did not result in any explosive device being found, and the area is now reopened to the public.

Sgt. Kelly Butler says police responded to the Victoria Street location at 8:15 a.m., after a report of an explosive device.  

The area was cordoned off, and nearby businesses evacuated.

The library and immediate areas were searched with an explosive-sniffing police dog, and the search did not result in the location of any suspicious packages or explosive devices.

Police continue their investigation.


UPDATE: 9:35 a.m.

Due to the explosive scare in downtown Kamloops, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District civic building and the Kamloops library, both located at 465 Victoria St., are temporarily closed. 


ORIGINAL: 9:10 a.m.

Police in Kamloops have closed two streets in the downtown core after receiving unconfirmed reports of an explosive device in the area.

As of 9 a.m., the 400 to 600 block of Victoria Street and 5th Avenue from Seymour Street to Lansdowne Street have been closed to pedestrians and vehicles.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area.

It's unknown at this time what the possible explosive device is.
