Impaired and dangerous

Kamloops RCMP are investigating after an alleged drunk driver was seen driving in the wrong direction, smashing into a parked highways' vehicle and then tried to run from the scene.

Police say they were tipped off that a man, believed to be impaired, was leaving Cascades Casino on Versatile Drive around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

An officer called to attend spotted the car driving towards him in the wrong lane on the TransCanada Highway.

The officer let the man pass, and did a U-turn and tried to follow the driver with his lights and sirens on.

About 150 meters past the Columbia Street overpass, the driver collided with a parked highways vehicle involved in snow removal.

The man then got out of his vehicle and attempted to run away.

An employee with the highways crew tried to stop the driver from running by verbally engaging with him until the police arrived on scene.

The driver was taken into custody.

He was then transported to a local medical facility for minor injuries from the collision.

The driver of the highways vehicle involved in the collision also went to hospital for minor injuries.

Alcohol is believed to be the contributing factor to the collision.

An impaired investigation is ongoing.
