Kamloops RCMP have a man in custody after he allegedly held a commercial truck driver at gunpoint after being picked up hitchhiking along Hwy 5 north of Clearwater.
Police were initially called at about 6:30 p.m. for a report of a trucker being held at gunpoint by a male hitchhiker who was picked up near the tiny community of Avola.
“The vehicle continued southbound and eventually was located and disabled by police near the Hwy 5 weigh scales with the driver being able to exit the vehicle unharmed,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk in a news release, adding the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The arrest led to the temporary closure of the highway at the weigh scale area.

What is being described as a 'high risk' police incident has prompted closure of two highways around Kamloops.
Police in Kamloops says the incident is taking place at the Highway 5 commercial weight scales on the southwest side of the city.
Highway 5 and the Trans Canada Highway are closed at the weigh scales due to what police say is a dynamic incident.
The public are being asked to avoid the area.
Police say they will provide more details as the situation develops.
