A scuffle with a prisoner at the Kamloops courthouse holding cells resulted in the fire department hazmat team being called in, Wednesday.
Just before 5 p.m., RCMP were called to assist sheriffs with the altercation.
During the scuffle, a baggie of suspected drugs was ripped open and four sheriffs were exposed, Cpl. Cheryl Bush said in a press release.
There was concern the substance could contain fentanyl, which can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled.
The Kamloops Fire Department hazmat team and BC Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene.
The sheriffs and prisoner were taken to Royal Inland Hospital as a precaution, and were cleared by medical staff.
Police continue to investigate the incident to determine if charges will be pursued.
