Emergency repair

UPDATE: Dec. 13, 7:40 a.m.

A sewer main break that prompted an emergency response Monday night has been repaired.

The City of Kamloops announced Tuesday morning that public works crews completed the repairs on Lorne Street at 11:30 p.m.

"After the new pipe was installed, crews ran test cycles to ensure all was in working order before backfilling the hole," said the city in a statement.

The damaged pipe will be inspected in an attempt to determine the cause.

"All road closures have been eliminated, however, due to cold weather conditions crews are unable to pave the affected area. Gravel will remain in place and may result in uneven road surfaces," said the city.

A sewer main break has prompted the City of Kamloops to activate its Emergency Operations Centre.

The city activated the EOC to a Level 1 status in response to the break on Lorne Street.

The city has located the break in the sewer line in the 800 block.

Diversion of sewage continues while the city mobilizes the necessary pipe replacement.  Additional equipment has been brought in from neighbouring communities to support the diversion.

City officials are working closely with provincial representatives including the Ministry of Environment, Interior Health Authority and Emergency Management BC, who are in attendance at the EOC.

CN and CP are also supporting the city’s repair efforts by providing property access and operational adjustments.

All residents east of downtown are impacted, and the city asks for their continued reduction of water usage to help reduce further backup and assist in timely repairs.

This includes Rose Hill, Valleyview, Juniper, Barnhartvale, Dallas, Campbell Creek, Sun Rivers and along East Shuswap Road.

The timeline for completion remains unknown at this time.

Crews will be working 24 hours a day until the break is located and repaired.
