Killed just before birthday

UPDATED: 7:42 p.m.

After looking at numerous residential surveillance videos, police are interested in speaking with the owner and/or driver of a dark-coloured Jeep-style vehicle.

This SUV was in the area at the time of the hit and run.

“It is always tragic when a young person dies, but in this case, where Jennifer died the day before her 17th birthday, it is especially heart-breaking. That is why it is vital that we speak to the driver of this vehicle,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. “We are asking the public to contact the Kamloops RCMP if they know who this vehicle might belong to or who the driver was.”

The investigation is ongoing by the Kamloops RCMP Serious Crime Unit and Traffic Services.

UPDATED: 6:53 p.m.

The 16-year-old girl, who was struck and killed by a hit-and run driver just hours before her birthday, Friday night, has been identified as Jennifer Gatey.

Her family is distraught – and desperate for answers.

“Take the saddest you’ve ever been and multiple it by a million – that’s how I feel,” her father Cameron Gatey told CTV News.

“You can’t imagine how upsetting it is that someone could hit and kill someone and just leave them by the side of the road.”

Her family described the teen as intelligent, athletic, and fun loving. She would have turned 17 on Saturday.

The family is now asking whoever was involved in the accident to come forward.

“You’ve ruined a whole bunch of lives,” Gatey said. “Turn yourself into police and do the right thing.”
