Explosion, fire in Kamloops

Neighbours of a home destroyed by fire in Kamloops' Westsyde neighbourhood Friday afternoon said it started with an explosion before flames erupted through the roof.

No one was home when the fire started at 4307 Karindale Rd. about 2:30 p.m.

The owner and his friend arrived at the scene to find the property engulfed. He had no idea what may have ignited the blaze.

“I dunno, man,” said the owner, who didn't want to elaborate. “I just got here. Somebody said there was an explosion.”

Four fire engines and three ambulances lined Westsyde Road as firefighters hosed down the flames. Most of the roof was burned, and the main floor of the home appeared to be gutted.

A neighbour named Gary said he heard the explosion and went inside his house.

“By the time I came back, all the bushes and the front of the house were burning. It was unbelievably fast. Ten minutes, and it was pretty much gone.”

A fire investigator was on scene, but the cause of the blaze has not been determined.
