Pipeline summit planned

A two-day meeting to discuss issues around oil pipeline development in Canada will be held in Kamloops next month, hosted by the Lower Nicola Indian Band.

The First Nations and Oil Pipeline Development Summit will be held Oct. 27 and 28 at the Kamloops Coast Hotel and Convention Centre.

The summit looks to bring together First Nations leaders, technicians who assess natural resource developments, and negotiators of impact management benefit agreements, from around B.C.

The summit also hopes to attract government officials and energy project proponents.

“The summit will provide the participants with a clear list of initiatives on how First Nations, government and industry can work together in regard to oil pipeline developments in Canada,” Chief Aaron Sam of the Lower Nicola Indian Band said in a press release.

The summit will focus on Kinder Morgan’s TransMountain pipeline expansion.

The goal of the summit is to share information and expertise, look to compare examples of First Nations engagement on other developments, and discuss the risks and opportunities of such projects.
