Recycling strike ends

The City of Kamloops and its recycling contractor have reached an agreement, ending a strike by employees of Emterra Environmental.

The recycling collection workers, members of the Steelworkers' Union, had been on strike since June 22.

The city announced Friday morning that curbside collection will resume on Monday.

It will continue on resident's regular collection days.

The four-year contract includes a 22.5 per cent wage increase over its term. That equals $1 an hour in the first year followed by five per cent increases in each of the next three years.

To assist in collection of stored up recyclables, the city is encouraging residents to spread out placement of the material at the curb over the next number of collection days.

The city will also collect additional recyclables, at no charge, placed curbside during the first week (Aug. 17-21) only, provided they are placed in clear plastic bags. Residents are asked to be patient as garbage and recycling pickup may not happen at the same or usual times.

Recycling depots at Bunker Road and Ord Road will remain reopen on Monday for residents to bring their own material.

Extra staff and pickups are anticipated to deal with the backlog.
