$500k in grants for TRU

Five Thompson Rivers University researchers are receiving research grants this year, making it the most successful discovery grant competition in the history of the school.

These projects will be funded for the next five years, and will bring more than $540,000 in new federal research dollars to the university. The funding is coming from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada.

"Discovery Grants allow researchers to make breakthroughs in a variety of research fields, including mathematics and statistics, biology, and geography," said Bart Cummins, in communications and marketing at TRU.

TRU researchers to receive funding include Richard Brewster for mathematics and statistics, Louis Gosselin for biological sciences, David Hill for geography, Jonathan Van Hamme also for biological sciences, and Qinglin (Roger) Yu for mathematics and statistics.

“We are so impressed by the caliber of research being conducted at TRU, and we congratulate the achievements of our researchers. These opportunities not only allow for additional discoveries to be made in the field, but they also directly benefit our undergraduate and graduate students, who are given the opportunity to work side-by-side with recognized subject area experts,” says Associate Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies, Dr. Will Garrett-Petts.

“The spin-offs created by these research awards considerable and serve as evidence of the university’s commitment to developing a vibrant and collaborative research culture.”
