Explosive device detonated

UPDATE 1:45 P.M,

Kamloops RCMP confirm that the incident on York Avenue in Kamloops has now been resolved.

Cpl. Cheryl Bush says the device was safely detonated by the Explosive Disposal Unit.

There are no longer any road closures or restrictions in effect and there is no further reason for any safety concerns.

The device was located at the front door of a residence when the homeowner was awoken by someone trying to break into the house just before 4 a.m. 

The Kamloops RCMP serious crime unit will continue the investigation into the incident.

UPDATE 11 A.M.:  The EDU (Explosive Disposal Unit) from Vancouver have arrived on scene and are arranging to transport the suspected explosive device from the address on York Ave, Kamloops BC.  As a precautionary measure, 8th Street will be closed down for a period of time while the suspected explosive device is moved and detonated in a safe area.

Kamloops RCMP have been in contact with nearby Bert Edwards Elementary school and spoken with the principal.  The school and students are not in danger and well outside the possible blast perimeter.  The school remains open. 

This matter is still under investigation.

Police in Kamloops are attempting to defuse a situation in the 700-block of York Avenue after a suspicious device was found this morning.

Part of the area has been evacuated and there are reports that the bomb squad is en route to the scene.

Bert Edwards elementary school is almost directly across the street from where the incident is taking place.
