Sask. man killed in Blue River avalanche

An avalanche that buried two men Friday night has claimed the life of a 36-year-old man from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.

Clearwater RCMP say the men were snowmobiling when the slide happened in the back bowl of Red Sands Mountain near Blue River, about halfway between Kamloops and Jasper, Alta.

Police say a group of snowmobilers were in the area and the other members of the group rushed to dig out the two men. They were able to quickly rescue one man, but the second man died at the scene.

Clearwater Search and Rescue and the BC Coroner were unable to enter the site that night due to the high avalanche risk.

The BC Coroner along with 2 Avalanche Technicians and Clearwater SAR were flown to the scene by helicopter Saturday morning.

The BC Coroners is now investigating the death. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.
