Hwy. 1 opens after fatal crash

4 p.m. update: Vehicle Incident 1 km west of Chase is now all clear.


2 p.m. update: The highway is now open, it is reduced to single lane alternating traffic following a fatal crash Friday morning.


Update 11:33 a.m.: RCMP report at about 5:40 a.m. two tractor trailer units, one headed eastbound and the other westbound, collided on a two lane section of Hwy. 1, about one kilometre west of Chase. 

The driver and one passenger in the eastbound rig were killed, while the westbound driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops for treatment. 

Cause of the collision is under investigation by Chase Detachment and South East District traffic reconstructionists. 

RCMP say road conditions were bare and dry at the time. Examination of the scene continues, and the highway will remain closed for several more hours.

Update -- 10:00 a.m.

The road is expected to re-open at 3:30 p.m. and detour routes are available via Hwy 97, 97A or 97B.


DriveBC is reporting that Highway 1 is closed in both directions west of Chase, due to a serious crash.

There are reports that one person is dead after two semi-trucks collided around 6:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Emergency crews are still on scene and there is no estimated time of re-opening at this time.

The other driver is said to have minor injuries.
