Here and there

It is busy on the phones at The Coast Capri Hotel these days as people call in for reservations for the annual Christmas festivities at the hotel. Their famous Dicken’s Lunch Buffet must be at least sixteen years old. Monika Lauterbacher, the Executive Chef of the facility has been there since the beginning of the event. I wouldn’t miss it and it’s good to see the companies who take the staff out for this major Christmas treat. You’ll find every treat you would want on the overflowing tables with food for the guests to enjoy. I happen to enjoy the lamb every year, but there is no end to the surprises on the menu. What a wonderful experience. From December 9th to 23rd. Call the hotel 250-860-6060.

The Coast Capri's tenth annual Tiny Tim Charity Toy Breakfast is on Thursday, December 2 where people bring toys for the Salvation Army and have breakfast buffet free from the hotel. It starts at 7am.

Kim Dorcas, Executive Assistant Manager of the hotel also tells me that reservations for Christmas dinner in the Vintage Room are also being taken. There are two servings, 4pm and 6:30pm on Christmas Day.

You can also have the hotel chefs prepare your Christmas dinner with all the fixings. They do the cooking, pack it all up and you take it home. Everything is there for the family dinner.

One of my friends and a longtime member of my Executive Roundtable, Brad Fields, is back in the business of manufacturing armor products for the military and the police with the opening on Nov. 8 of his AmorWorks Canada plant in Kelowna.

Mr. Fields and his wife Lori started the original Pacific Safety Products from their living room thirty years ago.

His new venture is to represent the Canadian operation of AmorWorks Canada. The plant will open officially November 8 in the Winfield Industrial Estate, the former Hiram Walker plant site.

Products manufactured in the Kelowna plant will include body armor for law enforcement, the military, aircraft and vehicle armor and blast attenuation seats for military vehicles. AmorWorks expects to employ 100 skilled staff for the Kelowna facilities.

AmorWorks is a leading provider of advanced safety products worldwide and has been in business since 1996. Mr. Fields will be the Director of Corporate Development.

Fox TV has sold out all the advertising time for February's broadcast of the Super Bowl, with ads reportedly selling for between $2.8 million and $3 million per 30-second spot. The news of the sellout comes earlier than for the previous game. Marketers advertising in the game include Anheuser-Busch InBev, PepsiCo, E-Trade and automotive marketers Kia Motors, Hyundai and Audi.

Winter Light Up is returning to Predator Ridge once again this year and there will be no shortage of fun and excitement at the popular festival. The outdoor light spectacle begins November 21, when the lights officially go on at twilight.

The day’s events begin much earlier with activities starting at 3pm. People of all ages will delight in taking part in seasonal activities such as pony and wagon rides, ball hockey, snowshoeing, and skiing the Nordic trails (weather permitting). Afterward, visitors can warm up by roasting marshmallows over a fire, drinking hot chocolate and decorating their own ginger bread cookies.

A full moon is expected that night, which will only add to the magic. Children will be especially excited to learn that Santa Claus himself will be dropping by the resort and will be available to take pictures.

In the spirit of the approaching holiday season, Predator Ridge will be giving back to the community. A portion of the proceeds from all hot dogs sold during Winter Light Up will be donated to the local Salvation Army. As well, non-perishable items of food will be collected at the resort. Let’s fill the truck!
