Obama’s burger joint of choice has come to Canada. Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a U.S. burger chain, has opened its first international location in Medicine Hat, Alta. They currently have a location in Vancouver and are about to have one in Montreal. Then the next move is Canadian expansion.
The U.S. President made headlines in May when he visited a D.C. franchise during NBC’s Brian Williams White House special, buying burgers and fries for himself and some of his staffers.
The company was founded in 1981 with a single location in Arlington, Va., and in just over 20 years has expanded to more than 450 locations in more than 30 states across the country.
Medicine Hat was the first on an expansive list of potential Canadian locations, mostly because it fits the needs of the Canadian franchise owners.
“We’re looking to source some of our food locally as we grow,” says Terry Jennings, vice-president of operations of Five Guys Canada. “We’re looking into getting our potatoes from Taber, Alta., and there’s nothing like Alberta beef.”
They’ll have to wait until a few more restaurants open before they go local, but Jennings thinks Canada is ready for a new burger joint — which will in most ways be identical to the U.S. version.
By the end of next year, Canadians from Vancouver to Toronto can expect a Five Guys outlet near home.
These burger spots are somewhat like the In and Out burger chain in California, although nobody does it like In and Out. Watching their kitchens put out the orders is a good show in itself.

According to Wikipedia, Sam Panopoulos, 76, of London Ontario, invented the Hawaiian pizza. He was apparently the first to make the dish at his Chatham restaurant in 1962.
At the time, pizza was still a novelty in Canada, he said. You couldn't even get a proper pizza box. With no template to work from, Panopoulos started to experiment with toppings and that's when he hit on an original. Panopoulos said his creation was a hit almost immediately.

Adidas AG, the world's second largest sporting goods maker, has sold almost one million replica jerseys of the Spanish national soccer team and designed a new version after Spain won the World Cup.
Adidas, which sold more than a million jerseys each of Germany, Argentina, Mexico and South Africa, shipped an additional 100,000 Spanish jerseys during the month long tournament.
The company has started producing a new version of the Spain shirt with one star in the emblem, representing the World Cup victory.
He also said Adidas will this year sell more than four million pairs of its latest F50, the shoe that scored the most goals during the tournament.
National team jerseys have a retail price of about $91 in Europe, while a pair of F50 shoes costs about $260.

Rumours that Bell Canada is moving to match a new discount offering from competitor Rogers Communications in what is amounting to a wireless price war that will benefit consumers, but threatens to drag down profits across the $16-billion industry.
The speculation suggests the country's No. 2 cell phone carrier will introduce lower-priced plans for its Solo brand.
It is uncertain when the new plans will be launched, but they may arrive at the end of the month or in August.
That is when Rogers is expected to launch "Chatr," a discount brand aimed at taking share in the lower end of the wireless market.

Surely there is something the city can do about the properties across from Gyro Park? They’re filthy abandoned developments in front of one of our beauty spots for locals and visitors. The weeds or whatever is growing are large and all over the place. It is so untidy. Ugly may be a better word.
Speaking of ugly, have you seen The Conservatory recently up on the entrance in the beautiful community of Glenmore? That is one hell of mess, has been for years and yet no one seems to care at all. We do have some people who certainly could make a decision, don’t you think?
Here is the latest we hear on The Conservatory site and the future of the property. There is someone, very qualified we are told, that is in the picture and has submitted an offer that seems acceptable to the banking interests in Saskatchewan, Conexus. Now the court has to accept the deal. We believe it is close to closing and that independent financing would be available.
We could also see if the courts don’t accept this offer Conexus to come back to one of the contractors that have been in and around the situation for the last few years making some kind of deal that would see the property completed and have people actually living there in the future. We can only hope . . .
Good grief !

I have a new place on my list of places you should try for a delicious light lunch and a fine bakery, Fessiwig’s Artisan Bakery and Cafe on KLO Road at the North entrance into the Mission Park Shopping Centre. They make good stuff and their bakery goods are some of the best we have seen in a long time. It is a busy spot and has tables both outside and in for a busy lunch schedule.
European style bakery/cafe with freshly baked goods and homemade soups, sandwiches, and other lunch options, all at reasonable prices.

Our Cooper’s Foods location has a new meat packing system that should prove very helpful to shoppers. Right now they are introducing vacuum-sealed beef in a new see through package. You can see the steak on both sides and there are no more Styrofoam trays. The meat is packaged in this case with two steaks and you are able to use just one if that is all you desire and you put the balance of the package back in the refrigerator, not the freezer.
It lasts this way as fresh as the day it was packed for thirty days in your refrigerator. The unique vacuum seal locks in the freshness and keeps the air out. Doesn’t change colour. No more leaks and it is easy to open. I am very impressed with this new approach to presenting beef. The company has spent millions of dollars in perfecting this new process for the Western Family line.
